YICL Announces Event Series on Prosecuting Heads of State for International Crimes
The Association of Young International Criminal Lawyers (YICL) is delighted to announce its upcoming event series on “Prosecuting Heads of State for International Crimes”, starting this September. This series will bring together leading scholars and practitioners to reflect on some of the most pressing debates in international criminal law: the scope of immunities, the challenges of prosecuting sitting and former heads of state, and the broader question of accountability for grave international crimes.
Over the course of the upcoming months, YICL will host distinguished speakers who will share their perspectives on different aspects of head-of-state prosecutions across history and jurisdictions. Confirmed events include:
· 19 September 2025, 3:00 PM CET – Prof. Dr. Diane Desierto: Immunities in International (Criminal) Law
· 24 September 2025, 3:00 PM CET – Dr. Iva Vukušić: Do You Think X Will Ever Stand Trial? Challenges and Experiences of Prosecuting Heads of State (A Historical Perspective)
· 1 October 2025, 3:00 PM CET – Ruby Rosselle L. Tugade: Eroding Impunity: How the Groundwork of the Philippines’ Human Rights Community Met Political Change to Hold a Strongman to Account
· 5 November 2025, 3:00 PM CET – Dr. Luke Eda: Personal Immunities before the ICC, Prosecution of African Leaders, and Questions Around “Double Standards”
· 19 November 2025, 4:00 PM CET – Dr. Noëlle Quénivet: Situation in Ukraine: Putin Arrest Warrant and the Aggression Tribunal
· 4 December 2025, 4:00 PM CET – Dr. Victor Kattan: The Long Road to Justice: Putting Benjamin Netanyahu on Trial
This series promises to be an enriching opportunity for YICL members and the wider international legal community to engage with cutting-edge debates on accountability, state sovereignty, and international justice.
